After a great trip with 23 volunteers who traveled to Biloxi the last week in January to work at the Back Bay Mission, it is time to think ahead to 2016. This year the 23 volunteers represented 13 different UCC churches in Minnesota. It was a great opportunity to get to know members of a wide range of churches and our new associate conference minister, Steve Boorsma.
The volunteers, in addition to helping repair a home for a disabled woman – who had inherited the house from her deceased sister – helped with:
- Loaves and Fishes;
- moving a Back Bay Mission tenant to a new apartment;
- operating the emergency food shelf;
- handing out food and unloading a truck with food supplies; and
- working with Micah (a drop in center for the homeless where guests can get a hot shower and their clothes washed).
There is a great need in Biloxi for help for those who have little income or resources to maintain their homes and provide for their families. Back Bay Mission has also built an apartment building where homeless vets can now live. They hope to build more units as the need is great.
We have reserved the week of January 31 – February 6, 2016 for our mission trip. We have reserved 25 slots, and already have 13 people who have indicated they want to go in next year’s trip.
If you are interested in being a part of the trip next year, please let me know of your interest as soon as possible. This is not a firm commitment, but if the interest is great enough, I can reserve another 15 slots for that first week in February, 2016. After the annual meeting in June we will start to request deposits and have people make firmer commitments. Those who contact me now will have first opportunity to be a part of the group, if the demand exceeds the number of slots we have.
The cost is $100 plus travel and lodging ($75/week/person in the mission dorm or an estimated $250 at an Extended Stay Motel for two people, 2.5 miles from the Mission).
