Back Bay Mission Trip January 31 – February 6, 2016

backbaymissionThe Minnesota Conference UCC is sponsoring a mission trip to Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi during January 31st – February 6, 2016. Thirty-six volunteers from eighteen different churches will be giving their time for this trip.

Back Bay giftsThe Vision Statement for Back Bay Mission is “To eradicate the sting of poverty and its effects on individuals and communities.” Volunteers will have the opportunity to help work on projects to help families who do not have the resources to make the major repairs necessary to make their homes a safe place to raise a family. Volunteers will also have an opportunity to help at the Micah Center which provides showers and washing of clothes for homeless individuals. Some volunteers will also be able to serve meals at the Loaves and Fishes center, distribute food at the emergency food shelf, or a variety of other projects that may need to be done to help those in need in Biloxi. There is something for everyone to do, no matter what their skills and physical abilities, or their age whether 16 or 100+. We prepare all of our meals, and with a group of 40 volunteers, that is also a task that will need to be done each day…

Volunteers will have an opportunity to stay in the Mission dorm rooms, in the new building built back bay housingafter Hurricane Katrina, or, for those who might want a more private sleeping arrangement (and for a slightly higher cost) at an extended stay motel, 2 miles from the mission.

For churches and individuals who are unable to participate in the mission trip, there are several ways to help Back Bay Mission:

  1. Raise money for Back Bay Mission through a church fundraiser, like a crawfish boil, or to give directly to Back Bay.
  2. To collect items that are needed for the Micah Center. One church is focusing on collecting jeans and new underwear. A great idea would be to focus on a few items a church could collect. (We are taking a trailer to Biloxi for the trip and we hope to fill it with items collected by churches and individuals).
  3. Collect items for the emergency food shelf.
  4. Collect items for the Pop Top Bag Wish List.
