January 2018 Fourth Thursday Meeting
Thursday, January 25, from 11:30am – 1:30pm at the Minnesota Church Center

Join faith formation leaders of children and youth from the Minnesota Conference UCC on the 4th Thursday of the month to eat together, share resources, and learn fresh ways to engage our ministries. The January topic will be:

The Why’s and How’s of Being a Trauma-Informed Congregation

Faith communities can be overlooked and underused as sources of healing and healthy connections. This seminar will explore the Biblical and theoretical foundation for intentional trauma-informed practices. It will offer practical ways congregations can be more intentional in their support of families and individuals facing trauma challenges. From small changes to larger modifications, we will touch on how to help your faith community move toward being a trauma-aware congregation.

Our Presenter: Sally Ankerfelt is an ELCA pastor of Minnehaha Communion Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. She holds a M.Div. degree from Luther seminary and a Certificate of Trauma Studies from the University of Minnesota. Sally also is co-founder of GIFT Family Services, LLC, a coaching company that provides support, guidance, and skill-building for families before, during, and after adoption.

Sally has presented seminars across the country around the topics of trauma; adoption; and ministry to children with challenging behaviors.

West Central Regional Youth Event 2018

Faith=Action: a just world for all

June 19-22, 2018 at Grinnell College, Iowa

In June 2018, over 200 United Church of Christ youth from Arkansas to Minnesota will be heading to Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA for the West Central Regional Youth Event (WC-RYE) This four-day gathering, from June 19—22, is open for current 6th through 12th graders. The cost will be $325 per person which includes dormitory housing in double rooms for three nights, 8 meals from Thursday dinner through Sunday breakfast, and all programs and service opportunities.

WC-RYE is an opportunity for our youth and their adult leaders to experience the vitality and diversity of the wider United Church of Christ, as they connect with youth from throughout the Midwest. The experiences and learnings from this event will be brought back home with the potential to nurture your congregation in new and exciting ways.

The theme for the 2018 WC-RYE is “Faith=Action: a just world for all. WC-RYE will offer participants opportunities to express how love of neighbor, love of children, and love of creation work together to bring about this new world . We will hear and share stories of the ways in which people are making an impact within the communities in which they live and how our collective work is transforming the world. Through dynamic worship, hands-on mission experiences, engaging workshops, small group faith exploration, and relational connection, youth will be nurtured as young leaders and better equipped to use their gifts to serve their communities and the world.

The Minnesota Conference would like to help connect and support youth and adults from our local congregations as they attend RYE 2018. The Conference is considering coordinating bus service to the event, if there is interest from our participating congregations. If you and your youth group are interested in attending, please check out the website for more information at or contact Kevin Brown, Associate Conference Minister for Faith Formation with Children & Youth.

Registration for the event will open in late January 2018.
