Divestment and Israel-Palestine: An Opportunity to Learn More
This summer the Minnesota Conference will be considering a resolution to divest Conference funds from corporations that profit from “illegal settlement in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.” An authorized minister of the Minnesota Conference, Reverend Lanny Kuester, spent three months in Palestine this past winter, and is available to meet with congregations interested in learning more about such actions and their potential impact.
As part of the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) sponsored by the World Council of Churches, Lanny lived in a small Palestinian village and personally witnessed human rights abuses of Palestinians. In his view, this resolution offers a small step to support Palestinian human rights and to protest against Israeli violations of basic human rights and the Geneva Conventions.
Rev. Kuester said upon returning from Israel-Palestine: “Let me be clear that I am supportive of Israel’s right to exist and I heartily condemn recent threats and attacks against Jewish organizations here in the United States. I also condemn the often reported abuses of Israeli human rights in Israel and Palestine. However, most people are probably unaware of the compelling Palestinian narrative about systematic Israeli abuses of Palestinian human rights in Israeli Occupied Palestine.”
If your congregation or group would like to learn more about both the Palestinian and the Israeli narrative in this complex situation, you can reach Reverend Kuester at LKue127163@aol.com.
