Back Bay Mission Trips 2017 & 2018
The 2017 Back Bay Mission trip to Biloxi Mississippi was an outstanding success for those volunteers who help the Mission serve those who need it. Of the 37 volunteers who participated in the 2017 Mission trip 21 have already signed up for the 2018 trip. The dates of the 2018 Back Bay Mission trip are January 28 – February 10, 2018. We can take 20 volunteers each week and the first week is already full, although we are requesting permission to bring more volunteers. There is still room for 14 more volunteers the second week.
During the 2017 trip the volunteers helped finish three houses so the families could move back in or in the case of a new construction, so they could close on their mortgage and move in. The second week the volunteers started work on a house which needed significant repairs so that the owner, an older widow, could continue to stay in her home safely. In addition to repairing homes, the volunteers helped at the Mission’s Micah Center, a drop-in center for the homeless where they can get a shower, their clothes washed and pick up some clothing items or personal items. Some volunteers also worked at the Mission’s emergency food shelf helping families to select food items for their families. The volunteers and their churches donated over 500 pounds of food and clothing items for the Micah Center and food shelf, which was transported to Back Bay in a trailer. Some volunteers also worked at the Loaves and Fishes Center, serving breakfast and lunch to the homeless and others who were hungry
During both weeks the volunteers had an opportunity to meet and share a meal with the clients of the Micah Center and hear their stories of why they are homeless. We found out that some choose to be homeless because of the freedom and others were there because of loss or job or inability to secure a job. The cost of the Mission trip is $300 (which covers your dorm bed, your meals, and a donation to the mission), plus the travel costs to and from Biloxi. Some people fly, others take trains and others carpool.
Anyone 14 years and older can participate in the mission trip. In 2017 we had volunteers who ranged in age from 19 to 87. The mission trip will be led by Bob and Barb Peterson, who have led Habitat for Humanity or Back Bay Mission trip for 30 years and are looking forward to year 31.
